Dante Alighieri is considered to be the greatest Italian poet of all time. His epic poem Divina Commedia (Divine Comedy) is generally regarded as one of the world’s literary masterpieces. In Italy Dante is known as il Sommo Poeta (the Supreme Poet).
The statue shows a dignified Dante: on his head he has the symbolic wreath, in his left hand a book.
