Dante Alighieri is considered to be the greatest Italian poet of all time. His epic poem Divina Commedia (Divine Comedy) is generally regarded as one of the world’s literary masterpieces. In Italy Dante is known as il Sommo Poeta (the Supreme Poet).
The statue is a small replica of the famous statue of Dante in Florence which can be found in the square opposite the Basilica di Santa Croce. This statue was designed in the 19th century by Erico Pazzi. See also Dante 2,3, and 4.
